Name Etymology and Historical Background:
Tabas is originally derived from “Tab” which means Heat.
There is no doubt that Tabas is an ancient city as such the prehistoric troglodytes’ traces on its valleys have been remained and most of villages and parts have retained their historic names. Tabas as green gem of desert with a history of over 2000 years, at the beginning of Saljoughi Turks conquers became the obedient of Sultan Sabz and was overcome at the end of Teymoorian and Safavian eras. And although in 1978the nature anger as an earthquake imposed a heavy pain in the history of the city but Tabas still is a flower garden in the heart of desert.
Naser Khosro (5th century) in his itinerary writes: “Tabas is a populated city although it’s like a village and is lacking of water and there is little cultivation but date palm gardens and cultivated farms can be seen and as you continue your way to the north is 40 farsang (240Km) far from Nishabour. The residents were really comfortable and they did not lock their houses and the quadrupeds were in the alleys. Although the city had no walls, no woman dares to talk to an alien man and if she did so, they will kill her and also there were no thieves and no murderers.”
There is a historical letter from Ali-Ben-Mussa (Emam Reza) which has been forwarded to Tabas governor. In the letter the writer has made some orders about his brother Hussein-Ben-Mussa. From the content of this letter, it is evident that the dominion of Tabas was authoritative.
From the past, Tabas had been the centre of different sciences especially Islamic sciences. As such the author of Alamout’s God says:
“If Tabasi instructors are not superior to Nezamiyeh School’s but they are not lower than them… in Iran, the only city that Fa’rs was being taught is Tabas. ( Fa’rs is a language that was popular in Iran before Islam).
s)which is a beautiful and historical structure.
A Brief Overview of the City of Tabas
By: Dr. Mehdi Vaez
With over 57000 square kilometers, Tabas is the vastest city of the iran.
Tabas is located 400 kilometer from the city of Yazd and in the northeast the province. The population of Tabas is 66,400 (2006 estimate). It is divided in three districts of central Tabas, Deihok and DastgerdAn. Tabas consists of three townships of: Tabas, Deihok and EshghAbAd. The Eight village centers of Tabas are: DastgerdAn, Deihok, Golshan, Kavir, NakhlestAn, Montazeriyeh, Pir e HAjat and YakhAb.
Tabas has historically been on the edge of major business and trade routes and for that a lot of KaravAnsarAys and travel stops have been set up which are now a place for tourist’s visit. It is said that the road from Part, HegmatAneh, Shoosh and Beinolnahrein to the PasArgAd passed through this ancient town.
One of the fortunate and unfortunate things that must be mentioned about Tabas and some other cities of the Yazd province are their locations in the desert. Desert is intolerable by many but could be very friendly and loveable toward the human being. If you ever stay in one of the desert towns, you would not want to miss watching the blue sky during the day and the stars at night! You would wonder about the color of the sky and the number of stars. At such time, you will forget about all the problems that you face in your daily life!
Unfortunately, many of Tabas’ historical sites such as the Do-menAr (two minarets) and Abolhassan Gilaki Castle were destroyed in the September 1979 catastrophic earthquake which claimed tens of thousands of lives. The earthquake was measured 8.7 in the Richter scale. Some of the remaining landmarks of the city as well as the tourist attraction areas are:
Golshan Garden
The Holy Shrine of Hossein ebn e Musa KAzem
Korit Dam (world’s biggest and oldest curved dam)
